International Award
The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is the world’s leading youth achievement award, bringing together practical experiences, skills development and community responsibility in order to equip young people for life. Young people in 140 countries worldwide participate in the Award and universities and future employers value it highly.
What is involved?
The Award is voluntary, non-competitive, challenging and fulfilling. It requires consistent effort over time. There are three levels to the Award : Bronze, Silver and Gold. At St. Stephen’s we currently offer the Bronze award to Year 10 and above, and the Silver award to Year 11 and above.
Each level comprises 4 elements :
Service : An activity that benefits others in the community or the environment.
Skills : An activity that improves a talent or mental ability.
Physical Recreation : An activity that improves physical fitness.
Adventurous Journey : An overnight camping trip which involves completing a trek or journey. |
Participants design their own Award programme, set their own goals and record their progress in an online record book (ORB).
Completing each level of the Award requires hard work, dedication and a keen sense of fun. It teaches participants that perseverance pays off, and that the best way to grow as an individual is to conquer challenges and discover new horizons.
“There is no challenge more challenging than the challenge to improve yourself.” Kurt Hahn, founder of the Duke of Edinburgh Award.
