Year 6 came over to the Secondary school and had a very exciting and informative Chemistry lesson with Mr. Selwyn, Head of Science and specialist Chemistry teacher. After familiarising themselves with various pieces of equipment, they carried out an experiment to separate the solid particles from a liquid mixture. The mixture was salty, sandy water, like you’d find at the seaside. The first stage was to remove the sand by filtering it through a filter paper (like straining tea leaves).
Next, the salt water collected was evaporated by heating in an evaporating dish with a Bunsen burner, leaving salt crystals behind. Unfortunately the water vapour was lost to the atmosphere, (but that’ll go towards making the clouds we look forward to in the rainy season).
