Songkran is the traditional Thai New Year which runs from 13 - 15 April. Songkran means ‘movement’ or ‘changing’ and is also called the “Water Festival” as water is a large part of the associated activities, washing away sins and bad luck. We were happy that it was back to business as usual for Songkran, with parents and students once again enjoying the fun together in school.
The day started relatively early, with the nine monks from a local temple conducting the auspicious ceremony in which they convey blessings to all who had gathered and receive alms from parents and students who made merit. This was followed by the water ceremony, in which students poured water over the hands of their teachers, who in turn splashed water lightly on their heads, with a ‘Happy Songkran’ as a blessing for a successful New Year and to bring them good luck.
There were then House activities on the field, all involving transferring water from one side of the field to the other by a variety of means. Sponge a teacher was especially popular. Finally, for fun and exercise were the Wacky Races in the gym with games of dodgeball and beachball-benchball. Finishing off the activities in Pavilion 1 there was a music and dance performance traditionally associated with Songkran. Parents were then invited to a special Songkran lunch, which capped off a wonderful morning and to welcome the start of their two week holiday.
