Model United Nations

On the 4th and 5th of February five students from St. Stephen’s attended the second annual Harrow International School Model United Nations Conference. For most students this was at least their second conference so they were feeling much less nervous than before. 

We arrived early at Harrow on Saturday and went straight into committees, discussing issues of global importance such as global free trade, tackling corruption, the rights of indigenous peoples and the civil war in South Sudan. Many resolutions were successfully passed after lively debate and discussion. Students from St. Stephen’s were representing the countries of Tanzania, Jamaica, Italy and Indonesia.

On the second day, all delegates moved to the General Assembly where everyone was involved in a session to respond to a fictional terrorist attack on Moscow. The assembly was in two factions: one supporting the resolution from China, and one supporting the joint resolution from the USA and Russia. In the end, neither resolution was passed, but this was perhaps a realistic outcome. 

We greatly enjoyed the two days and would encourage anyone interested in MUN to talk to any students already involved or to Mr Jimmy.
