Wai Kru Ceremony – Teacher Appreciation Day

St.Stephen’s International school had a “wai kru” ceremony on Thursday 26th September 2019. Thai culture fosters a deep respect for educators and the “wai kru” ceremony is a lovely way to start the academic year. The ceremony is very formal and decorative but it is also a vital part of the traditional Thai educational system.
On this day students bring flowers to their teachers as a symbol of their respect and readiness to learn. The most popular flower to bring is called “dok khem” (needle flower) because it represents the student’s promise that his/her brain will be as sharp as a needle. Some students also present jasmine garlands.
Primary students had a ceremony in the morning after the flag. Secondary had their ceremony at 9.30 a.m. -10.30 a.m. Both ceremonies watched a video presentation prepared and presented by Year 11. It is one of the events which demonstrates our school philosophy “Where East meets West”.
