Before the Flood

Nov 09 2016

In the lead up to the ‘Switch Off Fortnight’ event (an Eco-Schools committee led initiative to reduce our school’s carbon footprint) the Student Council held a showing of the National Geographic Channel’s recent documentary entitled ‘Before the Flood’. This film outlines some quite alarming statistics and facts about climate change .

Did you know?

•    50% of the world’s coral reefs have died in the last 30 years
•    last year’s forest fires in Indonesia emitted more Carbon Dioxide into the atmosphere every day than the entire US population
•    1 American’s energy consumption is equal to 64 Nigerians’ consumption
•    scientists predict that we will be able to sail over the North Pole during summer by the year 2040

The messages from this film are that we must act now and switch from fossil fuels to renewable energy, and that small changes in our diets such as cutting out beef and switching to alternatives like chicken will help reduce deforestation and cut Methane emissions substantially.
